 Hylics Introduction:

Hylics, a role-playing video game created and published by Mason Lindroth, made its debut on October 2, 2015, for Windows via Steam and Itch.io. This game stands out with its unique claymation graphics that bring a surreal world to life.

Set in a mysterious posthuman archipelago, Hylics is divided into three acts, each commencing with a prelude that partially uses randomly generated sentences to describe the ongoing plot events. The primary objective of the game is to confront Gibby, the King of the Moon, and the environmental design conveys this goal rather than relying on straightforward dialogue. Interestingly, the game's NPCs communicate using randomly generated text, contributing to its overall surreal atmosphere, and it is suggested that Gibby is responsible for the disjointed dialogue found throughout the game.

Gameplay:

Act I begins in the residence of the player character, Wayne, situated near a town and a facility that allows dimensional travel. As players explore the town and its neighboring mountain areas, they encounter Cone Cultists inhabiting ancient ruins, who prohibit anything from leaving the mountain to "reverse-erosion." Wayne crosses paths with an archaeologist named Dedusmuln, who is on a quest to find a paper cup for use with a water cooler. Inside Dedusmuln's tent, there's a device beside a bed that, when activated, reveals the cup's location through a dream. Within this dream, a room contains a Sage, an ancient ruler predating Gibby. Upon delivering the paper cup to Dedusmuln, they join Wayne's party. The warp facility also holds a device enabling Wayne to access a blue-colored dimension, where he must disable a gate preventing him from leaving the initial island in the main dimension. Another warp device in the blue dimension takes players to an island inhabited by Somsnosa, a friend of Wayne, who asks for assistance in retrieving her gauntlets from her basement, infested with Ambulant Skulls that are lethal on contact. After successfully recovering her gauntlets, Somsnosa becomes a member of Wayne's party.

Within the blue dimension lies a castle housing the gate controls. However, Wayne's progress is halted by a guard who conjures a "Horrid Projection" that must be defeated. Following the deactivation of the gate and Wayne's return to his home dimension, Act II unfolds. Wayne gains the ability to travel to other islands via boat, one of which is home to a knight named Pongorma, who has been sealed within a cave for many years and challenges Wayne to a battle. After Wayne's victory, Pongorma joins his party. Another island features a graveyard and a subterranean tomb that Wayne explores. Upon emerging from the tomb after thorough exploration, Act III commences, and Wayne acquires an airship, granting access to all islands in the archipelago.

The tokens of the Sage are utilized to activate a television set on a newly accessible island, bestowing the Sage's gesture, "Legend of Melting," upon all party members. To reach the Moon and confront Gibby, Wayne must obtain a spaceship key from a hot dog vendor. However, the key comes with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, another island houses a laboratory where devices capable of turning creatures into money can be found, providing enough funds to purchase the key. Following the spaceship's launch and lunar landing, Wayne embarks on a journey through Gibby's palace, ultimately facing off against Gibby in a climactic battle. After defeating Gibby, it is revealed that he has rigged the Moon to explode upon his demise, forcing Wayne and his crew to evacuate, concluding the game.

Final Words:

Despite its surreal setting, Hylics plays like a conventional JRPG. Instead of hit points, characters have "flesh," and magic points are represented as "will." Battles are depicted in a first-person perspective, showcasing the character's hands executing attacks. When defeated, Wayne loses all his flesh but does not perish; instead, he is transported to an "afterlife" from which he can return to a previous area. The game also incorporates unconventional battle items, such as the ability to attack with a frozen burrito. Furthermore, players can learn special attacks known as "Gestures" from televisions scattered throughout the game world.
